ITIL 4 Specialist: High-Velocity IT is the module for organisations that ship digital products quickly and cannot afford to choose between speed and stability. It is one of the four exams in the ITIL 4 Managing Professional designation, and it is the one that sits closest to modern product engineering: what a high-velocity digital enterprise actually is, how a digital product moves through its lifecycle inside the ITIL operating model, and how service management contributes to value when releases are measured in days rather than quarters.
The syllabus is the most lopsided in the ITIL 4 scheme, and this is the single most important thing to know before you start studying. One section, contributing to achieving value with digital products, carries 60% of the paper, which is 24 of the 40 questions. The remaining three sections share the other 40% between them. Studying High-Velocity IT evenly is how people fail it: a candidate who spreads their time across four sections in equal quarters has given three-quarters of their attention to material worth sixteen questions, and a quarter to material worth twenty-four.
The paper is 40 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, closed book, with 28 correct answers required to pass. That is a 70% threshold, five points above the 65% used at ITIL Foundation level. Combined with the weighting, the arithmetic is unforgiving: you can drop twelve questions in total, and the largest section alone contains twice that many.
Scheme status. PeopleCert released ITIL Version 5 in February 2026, and the current plan is to sunset all ITIL 4 modules on 31 December 2027. High-Velocity IT is live and examinable today. An ITIL 4 certificate earned now remains valid, renews on the normal three-year cycle, and still counts as a prerequisite for higher Version 5 modules, passing this exam is not wasted work if the scheme moves on. Every question carries one mark and there is no negative marking, so an unanswered question costs exactly what a wrong one does, never leave a blank. The paper is closed book, and candidates sitting in a language that is not their first receive 113 minutes rather than 90. Contributing to achieving value with digital products
Section 4 · 60%Twenty-four of the 40 questions. This section is the exam. It covers how service management contributes to a digital product achieving value in practice, across the range of techniques and behaviours a high-velocity organisation relies on, and it is examined the way the rest of the Managing Professional stream is examined, a described situation, and a judgement about what should be done in it rather than a definition to recall. Because it is 60% of the paper, it is also the section where the questions get genuinely discriminating: several plausible answers, one that fits the constraints in the stem. Plan your study so that the majority of your time and nearly all of your practice-question volume sits here. If you can only prepare properly for one section, prepare for this one, because clearing 70% overall is arithmetically difficult without a strong score in it.
Concepts of the high-velocity digital enterprise
Section 1 · 17.5%Seven questions. The framing section: what makes an enterprise high-velocity rather than merely busy, what digital organisations are optimising for, and the objectives such an organisation sets for itself. It is the cheapest section to learn relative to its weight, the concepts are few and the questions tend to be more direct than those in section 4, which makes it good value early in a study plan and a sensible place to bank marks.
The ITIL guiding principles and fundamental concepts
Section 3 · 15%Six questions. The guiding principles you met at Foundation, applied to a high-velocity context: what they mean when the cycle time is short, the pressure is constant, and the wrong kind of caution is itself a risk. Candidates who already hold ITIL 4 Foundation start ahead here, but do not mistake familiarity for readiness, this section asks how a principle changes a decision in a fast-moving organisation, not what the principle says.
The digital product lifecycle in the ITIL operating model
Section 2 · 7.5%The smallest section, worth three questions. How a digital product moves through its lifecycle and where that lifecycle sits within the ITIL operating model. Three questions is not nothing on a paper where you can only afford twelve mistakes, but this section should be the last thing you study and the first thing you stop studying once you have it.

Are there any prerequisites?
Yes. You need ITIL 4 Foundation, any ITIL v3 certification, or an ITIL 4 Managing Professional certificate before sitting the exam.
Do I have to take accredited training?
Yes. Accredited training is mandatory for High-Velocity IT, and PeopleCert withholds results without proof of completion, an exam voucher on its own will not produce a certificate. Budget and schedule the course as part of the credential.
Is the exam open book?
No. High-Velocity IT is closed book, no syllabus, no framework publication, no notes.
Do I need a DevOps or Agile background to pass?
No. The module is written for people working in or with fast-moving digital organisations, and practical exposure to that environment makes the scenarios easier to read, but the exam tests the ITIL material rather than any particular delivery methodology. What it does assume is ITIL 4 Foundation-level fluency, since the guiding principles section builds directly on it.
How long is the certification valid, and does the ITIL Version 5 release change that?
Three years, renewed with 60 CPD points or by passing another ITIL exam. PeopleCert released ITIL Version 5 in February 2026 and currently plans to sunset all ITIL 4 modules on 31 December 2027, but an HVIT certificate earned now stays valid, renews normally, and still counts as a prerequisite for higher Version 5 modules.
How should I prepare?
Study to the weights, not to the section count. This is the module where that advice is decisive. Contributing to achieving value with digital products is 60% of the paper, 24 of 40 questions, so it should take the clear majority of your study hours and almost all of your practice-question volume. Concepts of the high-velocity digital enterprise at 17.5% is the best value of the rest and worth an early pass. The guiding principles at 15% mostly need refreshing rather than learning if your Foundation is solid. The digital product lifecycle at 7.5% is three questions and belongs last. Candidates who allocate four equal blocks to four sections are the ones who come out just short: with a 70% pass mark, a weak score in the 60% section cannot be recovered from the other three. Drill blueprint-weighted sets until you are clearing 70% consistently, and read the explanation on every miss.
