Certification guide
The AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer – Associate (SOA-C03) is the current version of AWS’s associate-level operations credential. It replaced the AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate (SOA-C02) on September 30, 2025, and the rename from “SysOps Administrator” to “CloudOps Engineer” signals a real shift in what AWS expects the role to do day-to-day: less traditional systems administration, more automation-driven operations across accounts, Regions, and container platforms.
The exam validates that you can deploy, manage, and operate workloads on AWS – monitor and troubleshoot production systems, implement security controls, apply networking concepts, run backup and disaster recovery procedures, and remediate incidents at pace. Compared to the older SysOps exam, SOA-C03 expands into container services (ECR, ECS, EKS), infrastructure as code with the AWS CDK, multi-account and multi-Region governance, and the modern observability stack (CloudWatch cross-account, EventBridge, Systems Manager Automation). AWS’s target candidate has about one year of hands-on AWS operations experience plus at least one year in a related on-premises operations role.
SOA-C03 65 questions (50 scored / 15 unscored) 130 minutes 720 / 1000 scaled to pass ~$150 USD Valid 3 years
The exam is organized into five content domains. The weights below come directly from the current AWS exam guide and are the best guide to where to invest study time.
Monitoring, Logging, Analysis, Remediation, and Performance Optimization
Domain 1 · 22%Configure CloudWatch metrics, logs, alarms, dashboards and the CloudWatch agent across EC2, ECS, and EKS. Route events with EventBridge, drive automated remediation with Systems Manager Automation runbooks, and analyze performance for compute, EBS, S3, EFS/FSx, and RDS. This domain absorbed the old “Cost and Performance Optimization” domain from SOA-C02, so expect it to lean heavily on right-sizing, workload metrics, and remediation playbooks.
Reliability and Business Continuity
Domain 2 · 22%Implement scalability with EC2 Auto Scaling, ECS/EKS scaling, and managed database scaling (RDS, DynamoDB, ElastiCache, CloudFront). Build highly available architectures with Multi-AZ deployments, ELB and Route 53 health checks. Design backup and restore strategies with AWS Backup, point-in-time restore, versioning, and the standard DR patterns – backup/restore, pilot light, warm standby, active/active – matched to specific RTO and RPO requirements.
Deployment, Provisioning, and Automation
Domain 3 · 22%Provision resources with CloudFormation, the AWS CDK, StackSets, and EC2 Image Builder. Ship container images through ECR and manage golden AMIs. Automate operations with Systems Manager (Automation, Maintenance Windows, Run Command, Patch Manager) and event-driven workflows with EventBridge, Lambda, and S3 Event Notifications. Third-party tooling like Terraform and Git is explicitly in scope. This is a new emphasis area in SOA-C03 compared to the older SysOps exam.
Security and Compliance
Domain 4 · 16%Implement IAM (policies, roles, federation, MFA, resource policies, conditions), audit access with CloudTrail and IAM Access Analyzer, and run multi-account controls with AWS Organizations, SCPs, and IAM Identity Center. Enforce data protection with KMS, ACM, and Secrets Manager, and drive continuous compliance monitoring with AWS Config, Security Hub, GuardDuty, Inspector, and AWS Config conformance packs.
Networking and Content Delivery
Domain 5 · 18%Configure VPCs (subnets, route tables, NACLs, security groups, NAT and internet gateways), private connectivity (VPC endpoints, PrivateLink, peering, Transit Gateway), and the AWS network protection stack (WAF, Shield, Network Firewall, Route 53 Resolver DNS Firewall). Configure Route 53 routing policies and content delivery with CloudFront and Global Accelerator, then troubleshoot with VPC flow logs, ELB access logs, and Reachability Analyzer.
This 90-question practice exam is built to mirror the intent of the real SOA-C03 – a heavier practice bank than the live exam’s 65 items so you get broader coverage per attempt. Every question is authored to the practitioner-judgment standard: multiple options are plausible and each explanation identifies why the correct answer beats the closest near-miss (Multi-AZ standby vs read replica, target tracking vs step scaling, composite alarms vs input transformers, CloudFormation change sets vs drift detection). Timing is 130 minutes to match the real exam’s per-question pace.
We set the pass mark on the practice exam at 72%, an honest raw-score equivalent of AWS’s 720-of-1000 scaled cut. AWS scales scores by item difficulty, so a raw 72% is a floor rather than a target – hitting it consistently across a few attempts tells you the answer patterns and reasoning have taken hold, not that you got lucky on the easier items.
