About the AZ-900 exam
AZ-900 is Microsoft’s foundational Azure credential and one of the most-sat entry-level cloud exams in the industry. It targets candidates new to Azure — sales, marketing, and technical staff who need working literacy with cloud concepts and Azure services. There’s no experience requirement, and the credential does not expire.

Describe cloud concepts
Domain 1 · 25–30%Cloud computing benefits, cloud service models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS), cloud deployment models (public, private, hybrid, multi-cloud), and shared responsibility.
Describe Azure architecture and services
Domain 2 · 35–40%Azure core architectural components (regions, availability zones, resources, resource groups, subscriptions, management groups); compute, networking, storage, and identity/access services at an introductory level.
Describe Azure management and governance
Domain 3 · 30–35%Cost management, service level agreements, monitoring, and governance tools (Azure Policy, resource locks, Trust Center, compliance offerings).
Architecture and Services is the heaviest area at 35–40%, followed by Management and Governance at 30–35%, then Cloud Concepts at 25–30%. AZ-900 is conceptual throughout — expect to identify which Azure service fits a scenario, not to configure anything. Most candidates prepare in a few days to two weeks.

How many questions are on the real AZ-900 exam?
Microsoft no longer publishes a fixed count. The typical AZ-900 sitting delivers between 40 and 60 items across multiple choice and multiple response, with occasional drag-and-drop.
What is the passing score for AZ-900?
700 out of 1000 on Microsoft’s scaled scoring model. Item difficulty is factored into scoring, so raw percentages don’t translate directly.

Do I need AZ-900 before AZ-104?
No, AZ-900 is not a prerequisite for AZ-104, but most candidates without existing Azure experience find AZ-900 a helpful primer. If you already work with Azure daily, skipping straight to AZ-104 is fine; if you’re new to cloud, AZ-900 builds the vocabulary and mental model AZ-104 assumes.
How often does Microsoft update the AZ-900 exam?
Microsoft refreshes the AZ-900 outline periodically as Azure services evolve. Fundamentals exams typically see minor updates every 12–18 months without structural changes. Materials aligned to the current outline remain valid.
