ITIL 5 Foundation Practice Questions (Free Sample)

Free practice sample

Fifteen original ITIL Foundation (Version 5) practice questions, unlocked with no signup and scored instantly. The sample is weighted across all seven syllabus sections in the proportions PeopleCert publishes, so the mix you see here reflects the shape of the real paper rather than an even sweep of the syllabus.

ITIL Foundation is not a memory test in the way its reputation suggests. The questions that catch people out hand you a situation in which two answers are both broadly true and ask which one the framework actually names, the difference between an output and an outcome, or between utility and warranty, decided by the detail in the scenario rather than by the definition alone. These questions are written to that standard, and every explanation names the winning answer and the near miss it beats.

Which version are you sitting? This sample targets ITIL Foundation (Version 5), released February 2026. If you are booked on ITIL 4 Foundation, still examinable until the planned 31 December 2027 sunset, use the ITIL 4 Foundation sample instead. The two papers differ: Version 5 reorganises around products and services together, adds AI as an examinable section, and promotes the product and service lifecycle and value stream mapping to sections of their own.

  2. Question 2 of 15The ITIL Value System

  5. Question 5 of 15The ITIL Value System

An organisation adopts a set of management practices but treats each one as an independent process owned by a separate team, with no shared view of how work flows between them. Which problem does the ITIL Value System predict?

  6. Question 6 of 15The ITIL Value System

A manager wants a single measure that proves the value system is working. Which position is most consistent with ITIL?

  7. Question 7 of 15Key ITIL terms and definitions

  8. Question 8 of 15Key ITIL terms and definitions

A service is described as fit for purpose but not fit for use. Which pair of terms describes this, in order?

  9. Question 9 of 15Key ITIL terms and definitions

  10. Question 10 of 15Key ITIL terms and definitions

Which statement best captures why ITIL defines value as co-created rather than delivered?

  11. Question 11 of 15The ITIL Four Dimensions of Product and Service Management

A new service performs well in testing but degrades in production, and the review finds the supplier contract does not cover the volumes now being handled. Which of the four dimensions was under-served?

A product is nearing the end of its useful life and the organisation is planning what happens next. Which view is most consistent with the ITIL product and service lifecycle?

Frequently asked questions about ITIL Foundation (Version 5)

How many questions are on the real exam?

Forty multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, each worth one mark, with no negative marking. Candidates sitting in a language that is not their first receive an additional 25% of time, giving 75 minutes. Confirm current logistics with PeopleCert when you book, since the format is theirs to set.

What score do I need to pass?

Twenty-six of 40, which is 65%. Because every question carries one mark and a wrong answer costs exactly what a blank one does, there is never a reason to leave a question unanswered. The Certifym practice sets use the same 65% pass mark, so a passing score is an honest raw-score equivalent rather than a flattering one.

Which sections should I spend the most time on?

Two sections carry 70% of the paper between them: the ITIL Value System at 40% and key ITIL terms and definitions at 30%. Everything else is the remaining 30%, the four dimensions and the product and service lifecycle at 10% each, value streams at 5%, and ITIL and AI plus ITIL and other frameworks at 2.5% each. Studying evenly is the most common way to fail an exam this lopsided.

Do I need any prerequisites or accredited training?

Neither. ITIL Foundation (Version 5) is open to anyone and does not require accredited training. That changes higher up the scheme, the Practice Manager modules do require accredited training, but not at Foundation level.

Should I take ITIL 4 Foundation or Version 5?

Both are examinable today. PeopleCert has said the current plan is to sunset all ITIL 4 modules on 31 December 2027, so a candidate starting fresh in 2026 gets a longer runway from Version 5. ITIL 4 Foundation remains fully valid, renews on the normal three-year cycle, and still counts as a prerequisite for higher Version 5 modules.

I already hold ITIL 4, is there a shortcut?

Yes. The ITIL Foundation Bridge (Version 5) is a 20-question, 30-minute exam at the same 65% pass mark, and passing it awards the full Version 5 Foundation certificate. It is open to holders of ITIL 4 certifications, with the exception of the Acquiring and Managing Cloud Services and Sustainability in Digital and IT extension modules.

What changed between ITIL 4 and Version 5?

The framework moved from a service-centric model to one organised around products and services together, and PeopleCert describes Version 5 as AI-native by design. The 34 management practices are retained but regrouped, the product and service lifecycle and value stream mapping became sections in their own right, and the ITIL 4 extension modules are not carried forward.

How is this free sample different from the full Certifym bank?

The sample is a fixed 15-question set spread across the seven sections at syllabus proportions, with no account needed. The full Certifym bank is ten independent 100-question sets, each weighted to the same official percentages, at the same 65% pass mark. None of the paid-bank items appears in this sample.
