AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner Certification

Certification guide

The AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) is Amazon Web Services’ foundational certification — the credential that validates you can explain what the AWS Cloud is, how its core services fit together, how security responsibility is shared between AWS and its customers, and how the billing, pricing, and support models actually work. It assumes no hands-on engineering background, which makes it the standard entry point for sales, finance, project, legal, and leadership roles working alongside cloud teams, as well as the first rung for people heading toward the associate-level technical certifications.

The exam presents 65 questions (50 scored, 15 unscored pretest items you can’t identify) in 90 minutes, as multiple-choice and multiple-response items. Scoring is scaled from 100 to 1,000 with a passing mark of 700. There are no prerequisites, the exam fee is $100 USD, and the certification remains valid for three years before recertification.

Cloud Concepts

Domain 1 · 24%

The value proposition of the AWS Cloud: elasticity, agility, economies of scale, and trading capital expense for variable cost. This domain also covers the design principles behind the Well-Architected Framework, cloud economics and total cost of ownership thinking, and migration strategies — the 7 Rs, the Cloud Adoption Framework, and the global infrastructure of Regions, Availability Zones, and edge locations that everything else stands on.

Security and Compliance

Domain 2 · 30%

The shared responsibility model and where the line falls for each service type, identity and access management with IAM, MFA, and least privilege, and the governance layer of Organizations and service control policies. It also spans the security service catalog — GuardDuty, Inspector, Macie, Security Hub, WAF, Shield, KMS — plus compliance programs, AWS Artifact, and how customers demonstrate their own compliance on top of AWS’s.

Cloud Technology and Services

Domain 3 · 34%

The heaviest domain: recognizing which AWS service fits which job. Compute across EC2, Lambda, and containers; storage across S3 classes, EBS, and EFS; databases from RDS and Aurora to DynamoDB and the purpose-built engines; networking with VPC, Route 53, and CloudFront; plus the analytics, machine learning, IoT, developer, and migration service families. Breadth matters more than depth — the exam tests whether you can match a scenario to the right service.

Billing, Pricing, and Support

Domain 4 · 12%

Pricing models from On-Demand through Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, and Spot; the cost management toolkit of Cost Explorer, Budgets, the Cost and Usage Report, and cost allocation tags; consolidated billing under Organizations; and the four support plans with what each actually includes — response times, Trusted Advisor coverage, and when a TAM enters the picture.

Each practice exam below mirrors the real blueprint: 65 questions per attempt weighted 24/30/34/12 across the four domains, 90 minutes on the clock, with every question explained. The pass mark is set at 70% — the honest raw-score equivalent of AWS’s 700-out-of-1,000 scaled threshold. Because the domain weighting is enforced on every attempt, a passing score here reflects genuine coverage across all four domains, not luck in the heavy ones.
